The School of Government, established in September 2021, consists of the Department of Public Administration, the Department of Sociology and the Institute of Urban Governance on an integrated basis. Among them, the Department of Public Administration (formerly known as the Department of Administration) was established in 1985. Shenzhen University is one of the first universities in China to set up this discipline. In 1987, it edited a series of textbooks for administration; in 1988, it published the first series of administration translations -Translation of Administration and Civil Service System. The Department of Sociology, founded in 1996, has long been rooted in the pioneering reform practice in the social field of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. In 2007, it established the first social work organization with a university background in China, and has formed its distinctive advantages in the fields of social governance, social policy, social work, big data and computational social science. The Institute of Urban Governance is research institution directly under the management of the university, established in 2016 on the basis of integrating the Institute of Contemporary Chinese Politics established in 1999 and other research institutions of Shenzhen University (renamed as “Institute of Global Mega-City Governance” in 2022). TheResearch Report on Contemporary Chinese Politics, founded in 2002, is the first academic collection on the theme of “Contemporary Chinese Politics” in China, which has wide influence in the political science and administration circles at home and abroad, and is collected by the libraries of Harvard University, Oxford University and other famous universities.
The school is divided into the Department of Public Administration, the Department of Sociology, and the Department of Political Science (Institute of Global Mega-City Governance), with two undergraduate majors: Administration, and Sociology; two first-level master programs: Public Administration, and Political Science; two professional master programs: Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Social Work (MSW); and one doctoral program in the secondary discipline outside the directory: Political Communication. Among them, the major of administration is a national first-class undergraduate program, a featured major in Guangdong Province, and a key discipline in Guangdong Province. The school has the key research base of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation “Research Center for the Development of the Cause of Disabled Persons in the Pioneering Demonstration Zone of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”, the key research base of humanities and social sciences in Guangdong Province “Institute of Contemporary Chinese Politics” and “Research Center for Intra-Party Regulations”, the key cultivation platform of collaborative innovation in Guangdong Province “Research Center for Innovative City Construction and Governance”, and the research base of the China Social Work Academy “China Social Work Practice Innovation Research Center”, the key research bases of humanities and social sciences in Shenzhen “Institute of Clean Government” and “the Center for ASEAN-Greater Bay Area Studies” as well as a number of university-level key research bases.
The school currently has 55 full-time faculty members, including 13 professors, 18 associate professors and 24 lecturers or assistant professors. There are 1 national candidate of the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, 1 outstanding talents of the New Century Talents Project of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the Guiding Committee of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, 25 high-level professionals/Pengcheng Peacock Program talents in Shenzhen, and 8 leading scholars / outstanding scholars / Liyuan outstanding youth of Shenzhen University.
Theschool will be based in Shenzhen, rooted in the Bay Area and facing the world, aiming to become a world-class school of government management, with a high starting point in planning, high-level construction and high-quality development, and closely combining national strategies and urban development needs in the aspects of faculty development, discipline construction, scientific research, team cultivation and talent training, grasping the big opportunities of the pilot demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the “dual zone” drive, the “dual zone” superposition and the “dual reform” demonstration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, following the path of connotative, characteristic and innovative development, giving full play to the advantages of interdisciplinary integration, deeply integrating the development of the school into the whole process of “dual zone” construction, and striving to build the school into a high-level, international and first-class school of government management with equal emphasis on theory and practice, international and domestic connection, simultaneous efforts to teaching and scientific research, and combination of academic and moral education with the strong support of academic colleagues and all walks of life.
