I. Introduction to the Major
Urban management is the embodiment of national governance in the medium dimension of cities. It involves complicated governance issues in politics, economy, culture, society, law and many other fields. With the School of Government and the Institute of Global Mega-City Governance of Shenzhen University as the main construction unit, and with the China Society for Social Governance and urban management departments at all levels in a city as the joint training units, the micro major “Urban Management” aims to integrate theoretical knowledge related to political science, public management, sociology and law, provide diversified platforms and channels for students to understand and participate in urban governance innovation and research practice, and jointly cultivate composite innovative and entrepreneurial talents with multi-field professional knowledge, enthusiasm for urban public services, and active participation in urban management, so as to promote the modernization of urban governance system and governance capacity.
II. Talent Training Objectives
The micro major “Urban Management” intends to enroll students from all undergraduate majors in the university who are interested in the field of urban management and have basic knowledge in related fields. This major will refine the core skills of position groups in the field of urban management, and through the study of 8 core courses, enable the micro major students to quickly master the basic skills in the field of urban management. On the basis of combining with the students’ original major, it will address the matching issues between the major setting and the demand of the country and society for urban management talents, and enhance the competitiveness of the students in the field of urban management, especially when applying for civil servants, public institutions and other channels, with an expectation to cultivate urban management innovation and entrepreneurship talents in the new era who are politically firm, proficient in urban management theories, familiar with urban management practices, and interested in social public services for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the pilot demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
III. Training Mode
Academic System and Courses: The micro major “Urban Management” lasts for 2 years, and the courses are arranged in the 3rd to 6th semester, with about 4 hours per week.
Note: During the period of study, two courses are planned for each semester. The courses “Urban History” and “Urban Political Economy” are planned to be offered in the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year.
Learning Style
Classroom teaching and social practice are combined for the study.
Classroom Teaching: 5 basic theory courses will be offered on urban politics, urban management, urban economy, urban history and urban society respectively. The growth and development of any city cannot be separated from the city’s politics, economy, society and history, and promoting the modern management of the city requires a comprehensive grasp of these knowledge. These basic theoretical courses can ensure that students have a systematic and comprehensive understanding of modern urban management. Two cutting-edge courses will be offered on urban public service and smart city construction respectively, leading students to understand urban management from the perspective of urban service function and smart city development.
Social Practice:One practical course will be offered on urban management events with contributions of experts from urban management departments outside the campus, leading students into the real field of urban social management, so that the students will have more opportunities to deeply experience the relevant exploration and innovation in the field of urban management of Shenzhen, as the core city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the pilot demonstration zone of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and cultivate the students’ ability in theory serving practice.
Graduation Method
Before graduation, the students should write a graduation thesis on urban management under the guidance of teachers, or participate in urban management innovation and entrepreneurship projects, and those who pass will be awarded a “Micro Major Certificate”.
IV. Enrollment Method
Q1: The size and target of enrollment?
A1: The micro major “Urban Management” has a size of 25-30 students, which is open to the students (2022) from all undergraduate majors in the university.
Q2: What are the requirements for enrollment?
A2: (1)Students (2022) from all undergraduate majorsin Shenzhen University;
(2)Grade points and transcripts since entry into the university are requiredfor registration,and certificates obtained are optional.
Q3: What is the selection and admission method?
A3: According to the discipline structure of all applicants and the assessment results of relevant basic courses, the first 40-50 candidates will be selected for interview. Those who pass the interview will be admitted for the “micro major” study.
